The Smith Act (1940) declared that it was criminal to advocate the overthrow of the government by force or violence. This Act was used to prosecute socialists in 1941, and later communist party members in the 1950s.
The CPUSA also known as the Communist Party USA was established in 1919. The party went underground again in 1951and maintain operations under onerous conditions. Hungarian Revolution led the American communists who had remained members through the red scare to leave CPUSA by the thousands is allusionment about the communist movement and the Soviet Union attacks on communism during the red scare wore enough to cripple the CPUSA.
